The Jambukeswarar Temple at Thiruvanaikaval, about 3 km from Srirangam, is one of the most sacred Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the Pancha Bhuta Stalas — the five sacred abodes of Shiva representing the five elements — and this temple represents Jalam (Water).

"At Thiruvanaikaval, the divine manifests as water itself — in the ever-flowing spring within the sanctum, Shiva is eternally present as the source of all life."

The Water Spring Miracle

What makes this temple truly unique is the natural spring inside the sanctum sanctorum that perpetually floods the floor of the inner shrine. The Shivalingam is always partially submerged in this sacred water, representing the water element. The spring has never dried up in recorded history — a fact that continues to inspire wonder.

The presiding deity is Jambukeswarar (Lord Shiva as Appu Lingam — the water lingam) and the goddess is Akilandeswari, one of the most powerful manifestations of Parvati. The Akilandeswari shrine is particularly venerated.

Architecture and Legends

The temple has five enclosures and is said to have been built by the Early Cholas. The current structure dates largely from the Nayak period (16th–17th century). The massive outer gopuram is impressively decorated with painted stucco figures.

Legend has it that Goddess Parvati, seeking to understand the greatness of Lord Shiva, performed penance here in the form of a spider weaving a web shelter over the Shivalingam. The goddess is hence also called Kokilambika (spider goddess). Even today, the idol of Akilandeswari wears earrings gifted by the philosopher-saint Adi Shankaracharya.

Tips for Visitors
  • Dress modestly — traditional attire (saree for women, dhoti for men) is appreciated
  • The inner shrine with the water spring is accessible only during specific puja timings
  • Visit on a Friday for the special Akilandeswari puja — the goddess is believed to be most accessible on Fridays
  • Photography is restricted in the inner prakarams
  • A guide service is available at the temple to explain the mythology and architecture
