Trichy's central location in Tamil Nadu makes it an exceptional base for exploring some of the most spectacular heritage sites, natural landscapes, and cultural destinations in South India. All five destinations below can be done as comfortable day trips from DD Home 2 Suites — return to your suite each evening and head out fresh the next morning.

Thanjavur Brihadeeswarar Temple

Thanjavur — City of Temples

55 km 1 hr drive

No day trip from Trichy is more rewarding than a visit to Thanjavur, the ancient capital of the Chola empire. The city's crown jewel is the Brihadeeswarar Temple (Big Temple) — a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by Raja Raja Chola I in 1010 CE. Standing 66 metres tall, its vimana (tower) is one of the tallest in India and cast no shadow at noon — a remarkable feat of ancient engineering and astronomical precision.

Beyond the Big Temple, Thanjavur offers the Thanjavur Palace with its Royal Museum and art gallery, the magnificent Saraswati Mahal Library (one of the oldest libraries in Asia with over 60,000 manuscripts), and the famous Thanjavur Maratha Palace.

Must See in Thanjavur
  • Brihadeeswarar Temple (UNESCO World Heritage) — the magnificent Big Temple
  • Thanjavur Palace Museum — Chola bronzes and Maratha art collections
  • Saraswati Mahal Library — ancient manuscripts including palm leaf texts
  • Schwartz Church — 18th century church with Thanjavur paintings
  • Buy authentic Thanjavur paintings and bronze idols from government-certified shops
How to Reach
1-hour drive from DD Home 2 Suites. Hire a full-day taxi (₹1,500–2,000) or take the frequent bus from Chathram Bus Stand (1.5 hrs, ₹55). Our concierge can book a comfortable taxi with a guide.
Kumbakonam Temples

Kumbakonam — Temple Town

90 km 2 hrs drive

Known as the "Town of Temples", Kumbakonam is home to an extraordinary concentration of ancient temples dedicated to both Shiva and Vishnu. The city is particularly famous for the Mahamaham festival — held every 12 years — when millions of pilgrims bathe in the sacred Mahamaham tank, one of the most spectacular religious gatherings in India.

Key temples include the Adi Kumbeswarar Temple (the main Shiva temple from which the city gets its name), the Sarangapani Temple (one of the 108 Divya Desams), and the famous Darasuram Airavateswarar Temple (another UNESCO World Heritage Site, just 5 km away).

Highlights
  • Adi Kumbeswarar Temple — beautiful Nayak architecture
  • Darasuram Airavateswarar Temple (UNESCO) — stunning Chola architecture
  • Mahamaham Tank — sacred tank with 16 ghats
  • Famous Kumbakonam Filter Coffee and traditional sweets (halwa, payasam)
How to Reach
About 2 hours by taxi from DD Home 2 Suites (₹2,000–2,500 return). Regular trains from Trichy Junction to Kumbakonam (1.5 hrs) are comfortable and scenic.
Kodaikanal Hill Station

Kodaikanal — Princess of Hill Stations

165 km 3.5 hrs drive

At 2,133 metres above sea level in the Palani Hills, Kodaikanal is one of South India's most beloved hill stations and the perfect escape from Trichy's plains. The drive up the ghat road itself is breathtaking — 40 km of hairpin bends through shola forests with dramatic views opening up at every turn.

The centrepiece is the stunning Kodaikanal Lake — a star-shaped artificial lake where you can hire boats or cycle around its 5 km perimeter. The Coaker's Walk, a 1 km promenade along a ridge with sheer drops to the plains 1,500 metres below, is unmissable. Silver Cascade Falls, Bear Shola Falls, and the Pillar Rocks are other highlights.

Highlights
  • Kodaikanal Lake — boating and cycling
  • Coaker's Walk — panoramic views of the plains
  • Pillar Rocks — dramatic granite columns
  • Bryant Park — beautiful botanical garden
  • Pine Forest — atmospheric shola forest walks
  • Buy fresh homemade chocolates and eucalyptus oil

Note: At 165 km, this is best done as an overnight stay rather than a single day trip. Our team can help book accommodation in Kodaikanal and arrange a comfortable taxi for the journey.

How to Reach
3.5 hours by taxi from DD Home 2 Suites. No direct train — taxi is the most comfortable option. Full-day taxi approximately ₹3,500–4,500. Book through our concierge for the best rates.
Chidambaram Nataraja Temple

Chidambaram — Abode of Dancing Shiva

150 km 3 hrs drive

The Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram is one of the most philosophically profound temples in India. It is the one temple where Lord Shiva is worshipped in his cosmic form as Nataraja — the Lord of Dance — a concept that captures the cycle of creation, preservation, and dissolution in the image of a dancing god.

The temple complex spreads over 40 acres with four enormous gopurams covered in thousands of figures depicting the 108 classical dance poses (karanas) from the Natya Shastra. The inner sanctum contains the unique Chidambara Rahasyam — the secret of Chidambaram — a gold-leaf screen behind which the formless Shiva (Akasha Lingam) is represented, symbolising the sky/space element.

Highlights
  • Nataraja Temple — magnificent Chola-era architecture
  • The Chidambara Rahasyam — the philosophical heart of the temple
  • 108 Bharatanatyam karanas carved on the gopurams
  • The famous Arudra Darisanam festival in December/January
How to Reach
About 3 hours from DD Home 2 Suites by taxi (₹3,000–3,500 return). Trains from Trichy Junction to Chidambaram take approximately 3.5 hours — a scenic Cauvery delta journey.
Yercaud Hill Station

Yercaud — Jewel of South India

90 km 2 hrs drive

Yercaud — often called the "Poor Man's Ooty" (though it deserves better) — is a charming hill station in the Shevaroy Hills near Salem at 1,515 metres altitude. Far less commercialised than Ooty or Kodaikanal, Yercaud offers lush coffee plantations, orange orchards, a peaceful lake, and wonderful misty weather at an accessible distance from Trichy.

The Yercaud Lake, the Lady's Seat viewpoint, Killiyur Waterfall, and the enchanting walks through coffee estates are the main attractions. The Shevaroyan Temple at the peak of Shevaroy hills is a unique tribal deity worship site with spectacular views.

Highlights
  • Yercaud Lake — peaceful boating in a misty setting
  • Lady's Seat — panoramic views of the Salem plains
  • Coffee and orange plantation walks
  • Killiyur Waterfall — beautiful cascade in the forest
  • Shevaroyan Temple — unique hilltop tribal shrine
  • Buy fresh plantation coffee and oranges directly
How to Reach
About 2 hours by taxi from DD Home 2 Suites (₹2,000–2,500 return). Train to Salem then taxi up the ghat (30 min) is another good option.
