Mukkombu — also called the Upper Anaicut or Grand Anaicut — is where the mighty Cauvery river dramatically splits into two streams: the main Cauvery and the Kollidam (Coleroon) river. Located about 20 km from Trichy near the town of Mukkombu, this scenic spot is one of the most popular nature getaways for Trichy residents and a fascinating piece of engineering history.
"To stand at Mukkombu where the Cauvery divides is to witness the moment a great river makes its choice — and in doing so, gives life to millions of people across the delta."
The Engineering Wonder
The Grand Anaicut dam at Mukkombu was constructed by the British in 1836 across the Cauvery river to regulate the river's water and enable controlled irrigation. This regulator — a massive structure of stone and mortar — has been serving Tamil Nadu's farmers for nearly two centuries and remains operational today.
The anaicut is a continuation of the ancient water management tradition established by the legendary Kallanai Dam 45 km upstream — one of the oldest water diversion structures in the world still in use (built by Karikala Chola over 2,000 years ago).
The Scenic Experience
The area around Mukkombu is genuinely beautiful — the sound of rushing water, the green riverbanks, the sight of both channels of the Cauvery stretching into the distance. The Mukkombu Deer Park is a lovely addition with a small population of deer and peacocks in a natural setting.
Boating on the Cauvery here is a popular activity — both rowboats and motorboats are available for hire. The boat ride gives you a wonderful perspective of the split river and the lush river islands.
Visitor Tips
- Best visited between October and February when the river flow is optimal and the weather pleasant
- Carry your own snacks and water — facilities at the site are basic
- The deer park is best visited in the early morning when animals are most active
- Monsoon season (July–September) makes the river spectacular but also more dangerous — exercise caution
- Weekends can be crowded with local families — weekdays are more peaceful
